Fish

With 8500 kilometers of coastline, as well as a multitude of rivers and lakes, which corresponds to 13.7% of the world's fresh water, Brazil concentrates a gigantic aquatic biodiversity, giving the country a great fishing potential. Nevertheless, 60% of fish that Brazilians consume are imported from other countries in South America, Asia and Europe. Several factors, from the fishing culture in the country, to transport difficulties help explain why this phenomenon occurs.

Laurent Viguié, director of the Marine Stewardship Council Brazil, the body responsible for certifying the fish sold in the country, says that the main imported fish are salmon, from Chile; polish, fished in the Pacific Ocean and processed in China; the fish-panga, Southeast Asia; and cod caught in the North Atlantic. Laurent explains that cod consumption is high because it was inherited from the culture of Portugal. As the fish does not occur on the Brazilian coast, you need to buy it from the North Atlantic producers. The same applies to the salmon, which is produced in the icy waters of the Chilean coast.

Besides the advantage in your pocket, imported fish please the taste of Brazilian consumers, says Mauricio Almada, commercial director of butcher and fishmonger area of Walmart in the country. Today, up to two thirds of the fish sold in Group stores come from abroad.

Another good news is the increase in consumption, synonymous with healthy eating. According to the Ministry of Fisheries, last year the country reached the mark of 14.5 kilograms per inhabitant, 120% more than a decade ago and above the recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) of 13 kilograms per person. In 2013, 92,000 tonnes of chinese fish were imported, 12 times more than 7,200 tons in 2009. In the same period, Vietnam's fish imports jumped from 3.2 thousand to 54 thousand tons. In 2010, China and Vietnam, together, exceeded Chile as the main fish supplier to Brazil.
